What Is FaceUp? Auckland's Advanced Facial Massage Explained

By Thrive Therapy Clinic | Auckland CBD

If you've been seeing the term FaceUp appearing more and more — on social media, in wellness conversations, or maybe on our own Instagram — and you're wondering what it actually is, you're in the right place.

FaceUp is one of the most talked about treatments in the facial wellness space right now, and for good reason. But it's also one of the most misunderstood. So let's clear that up properly.

What Is FaceUp?

FaceUp is an advanced facial massage method that works therapeutically on the muscles, fascia and connective tissue of the face, jaw and neck. It is not a facial. It is not a beauty treatment. It is not relaxation massage with nice smelling oils applied to your skin.

FaceUp is deep tissue work — applied to the face.

The method combines a range of advanced manual techniques including myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, deep tissue massage, buccal massage and traction to address the muscular and structural causes of facial tension, pain and aesthetic concerns. Every session is tailored to the individual and every session goes deeper than the one before as the tissue begins to release and respond.

How Does FaceUp Work?

To understand how FaceUp works, it helps to understand what's actually happening beneath the surface of your face.

Your face contains over 40 muscles — and just like every other muscle in your body, they accumulate tension, develop trigger points, and become restricted when they're overworked, stressed or simply never treated. The difference is that while most people think to get their back, neck and shoulders massaged, almost nobody thinks to address the muscles of the face.

The result is that most people are carrying years of accumulated tension in their jaw, their temples, their forehead and their neck — and they've never once had it properly released.

FaceUp works by addressing that tension directly. Here's what a full session involves:

Cleanse The treatment begins with a thorough cleanse — preparing the skin and allowing the therapist to assess the tissue and identify areas of restriction before work begins.

Hot Towels Warm towels are applied to begin softening the tissue, increasing local circulation and preparing the fascia for deeper work. Most clients feel themselves beginning to relax at this point.

Lymphatic Activation Before any deep work is applied, we stimulate the lymphatic vessels in the face and neck to begin moving fluid and reducing congestion. This is an important first step — clearing the system before we go deeper means the results are significantly more pronounced.

Myofascial Release and Stretch The fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds and connects every muscle in the face — is worked through systematically. Fascial restriction is one of the most common contributors to facial tension, asymmetry and that feeling of tightness that never fully releases. Myofascial techniques restore mobility and allow the deeper tissue work to be more effective.

Deep Tissue — Chest, Neck, Jaw and Face This is the core of the FaceUp treatment. Targeted deep tissue work is applied through the chest, neck and face — addressing the muscles most people don't even know they're holding. The masseter. The temporalis. The platysma running down the front of the neck. The suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull. The sternocleidomastoid. Each one is systematically worked through, released and restored.

Buccal Massage Buccal massage is intraoral jaw release — one of the most effective and most unique techniques in the FaceUp method. Working from inside the mouth, the therapist releases the masseter and surrounding jaw muscles from the inside — achieving a depth of release that simply isn't possible from the outside alone. Most clients describe this as the most extraordinary part of the treatment. The relief is immediate and unlike anything most people have experienced before.

Traction The final step. Gentle but precise decompression of the neck and jaw joints — creating space, relieving compression and allowing the whole structure to fully reset. Most clients are speechless after traction. It's consistently described as the moment the entire treatment comes together.

What Are the Physical Benefits of FaceUp?

FaceUp addresses real, physical problems — not just aesthetic ones. Here's what it treats:

Jaw Tension and TMJ Dysfunction The jaw is one of the most overworked joints in the body. Chewing, talking, clenching under stress, grinding at night — it never fully rests. When the masseter and surrounding muscles become chronically tight, the effects are significant. Jaw clicking, locking, pain when eating, difficulty opening the mouth fully — all of these are signs the jaw needs direct treatment. FaceUp addresses jaw tension more effectively than almost any other manual therapy.

Tension Headaches Most tension headaches don't start in the head. They start in the muscles of the jaw, neck and base of the skull — and refer pain upward. Releasing those muscles through FaceUp reduces the frequency and intensity of tension headaches significantly for most clients.

Neck Stiffness and Restricted Range of Motion The neck work involved in a FaceUp session — particularly the platysma release, the SCM work and the traction — restores mobility in the neck and upper cervical spine in a way that feels immediately transformative.

Postural Improvement Tight chest and neck muscles pull the head forward and the shoulders inward. Releasing the pectoral muscles and the anterior neck as part of FaceUp treatment has a meaningful impact on posture — particularly for people who spend long hours at a desk.

Nervous System Regulation The face and jaw are neurologically dense areas. Releasing tension in these structures has a genuine calming effect on the nervous system — reducing cortisol, lowering heart rate and producing a state of deep rest that most clients haven't experienced in a long time.

What Are the Aesthetic Benefits of FaceUp?

The physical and aesthetic benefits of FaceUp are deeply connected — and this is one of the things that makes the treatment so uniquely effective.

Facial Sculpting and Definition When the masseter is chronically tight, it creates a square, heavy appearance along the jawline. When it releases, the jaw becomes more defined, the face appears slimmer and the overall structure looks more lifted. This is entirely natural — no injectables, no devices, just the muscle doing what it's supposed to do when it's no longer locked in tension.

Facial Lifting Chronic muscle tension pulls the face downward. Fascial restriction reduces mobility and creates the appearance of heaviness. Releasing both — through the myofascial and deep tissue work in FaceUp — produces a visible lifting effect that clients notice immediately in the mirror.

Improved Skin Quality The lymphatic drainage and circulation work in FaceUp has a direct impact on skin quality. Improved lymphatic flow reduces puffiness and congestion. Better circulation brings oxygen and nutrients to the surface. The result is skin that looks clearer, more even and genuinely glowing — not because anything was applied to it, but because the systems underneath are functioning better.

Reduced Puffiness Facial puffiness — particularly around the eyes, jaw and cheeks — is often a sign of sluggish lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic activation that forms part of every FaceUp session addresses this directly. Most clients notice a visible reduction in puffiness immediately after their first session.

Natural Alternative to Injectables FaceUp is increasingly sought out as a natural alternative — or complement — to cosmetic procedures. While it isn't a replacement for everything, it addresses the muscular and fascial causes of many of the concerns that drive people toward injectables in the first place. Many clients find that regular FaceUp sessions significantly reduce their desire for further intervention.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

Most clients notice a meaningful difference after their very first FaceUp session. The jaw feels lighter. The face looks more defined. The tension headaches that were a daily occurrence have eased.

For lasting structural change, we recommend a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart to begin with. Think of the first session as an introduction — your tissue releasing for the first time. Each session builds on the last, going deeper and achieving more as the muscles learn to let go.

After an initial course, most clients maintain with monthly or six-weekly sessions depending on their needs.
