Lymphatic Drainage in Auckland: Why Summer Is the Time to Book
Summer in Auckland is almost here. The days are longer, the calendar fills with Christmas parties and long lunches, and for a lot of us the heat brings something less welcome: swollen ankles, puffy hands and legs that feel heavy by the end of the day.
This is when lymphatic drainage becomes one of the most-booked treatments at both our Auckland CBD and Takapuna clinics. Here’s why summer affects your lymphatic system, what lymphatic drainage can and can’t do, and how to make the most of it over the warmer months.
Why You Feel Puffier in Summer
Your lymphatic system moves fluid from your tissues back into your circulation. Unlike your blood, lymph doesn’t have a pump. It relies on movement, breathing and muscle contraction to keep it flowing.
In warm weather, a few things work against it:
Heat widens your blood vessels. To cool you down, your body dilates the blood vessels near the skin. More fluid moves out into the surrounding tissue, and gravity pulls it towards your lower legs and ankles. That’s why your shoes can feel tighter on a hot afternoon than they did in the morning.
Long days on your feet, or in a chair. Summer events mean more standing, and for many of us the working week is still eight hours at a desk. Neither helps lymph move out of the legs.
Travel. Long-haul flights and long road trips to the bach mean hours of sitting still in one position. Swollen feet and ankles after a flight are common.
The festive season. More salt, more alcohol, later nights and less routine can all leave you feeling puffy and heavy. None of this is a problem in itself. It’s just your body responding to a busier few weeks.
What Lymphatic Drainage Actually Does
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin and encourages fluid to move towards the lymph nodes, where it’s processed and returned to circulation.
It’s very different from a deep tissue or sports massage. The pressure is light by design, because the vessels it works on sit close to the surface. Pressing harder doesn’t make it work better. It’s one of the most common misconceptions we hear about in clinic.
After a session, clients most often tell us they notice:
- Less swelling and puffiness, particularly in the legs, ankles and face
- A feeling of lightness, especially in heavy, tired legs
- A calmer nervous system. The slow, repetitive strokes are deeply relaxing, and many clients fall asleep on the table
- Less bloating and abdominal discomfort, when abdominal work is included
It’s worth being clear about the evidence. MLD is well established in clinical settings, particularly for lymphoedema and post-surgical swelling. For general puffiness and wellbeing, the research is more limited, although the experience in the treatment room is consistent: most people feel noticeably lighter and less swollen afterwards. We’ll always be clear with you about what to expect.
And no, it isn’t a “detox”. Your liver and kidneys take care of that. Lymphatic drainage supports a system that’s already working, and helps it move a little more efficiently when it’s under extra pressure.
When to Book Over Summer
Before a big event. Christmas parties, weddings, holidays: a session a day or two beforehand can reduce puffiness, particularly in the face and legs. Facial lymphatic work is especially popular before events.
Before and after travel. A session before a long flight helps you start with less fluid build-up, and one in the days after you land helps ease swelling in the feet and ankles.
As regular maintenance. For lasting change, a course of sessions works far better than a one-off. Many clients book weekly or fortnightly over summer when the heat makes swelling worse.
After a busy stretch. If the festive season has left you feeling heavy, sluggish and out of routine, lymphatic drainage is a gentle reset that doesn’t ask anything of you.

- A history of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Heart or kidney conditions

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get lymphatic drainage massage in Auckland?
Thrive Therapy Clinic offers manual lymphatic drainage at two locations: our Auckland CBD clinic and our Takapuna clinic on the North Shore.
How often should I have lymphatic drainage?
It depends on your goals. For swelling or a specific concern, weekly sessions for four to six weeks usually works best. For general maintenance, every two to four weeks is common.
How long does a session take?
We offer 45, 60 and 90 minute sessions. A 90 minute session allows time for the full body, including abdominal and facial work.
Does lymphatic drainage hurt?
No. The pressure is very light and most people find it deeply relaxing.
What should I do after a session?
Drink water, move gently and avoid a heavy meal straight afterwards. You may need to go to the toilet more often for the rest of the day.
